Cranfield University has chosen the NewTek TriCaster video production system and NDI to deliver its live online classes.
The technology – NDI as the single interconnected production environment, with TriCaster managing and controlling the range of production equipment – has allowed the university to deliver professional-looking, live online broadcasts for students.
The university, which is the UK’s biggest provider of master’s-level graduates in engineering, previously relied on standard live-video streaming products and laptop cameras to deliver its online lessons. But poor video quality meant that Cranfield had to seek a new solution to update its infrastructure and live streaming capabilities.
Dr Toby Thompson, director of Cranfield University Broadcast and Record, said: “When scoping the studio build, we ran with the vision to live-stream to the whole campus, and looked around for technology to enable this. NDI technology was the obvious contender due to its cost-effectiveness from multiple campus locations, as well as its ease of use.”
Cranfield installed a TriCaster Mini and used it with the NewTek TalkShow VS 4000 multi-channel video-calling system, which is designed to connect up to four remote guests simultaneously in real time. As a result of increased demand and the success of the production studio, the university has upgraded to NewTek’s TriCaster 2 Elite, which provides greater functionality.
